LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY

There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). They are separate documents so it is possible to make just one or both if appropriate:-

A Property and Affairs LPA enables you (the Donor) to appoint one or more persons (the Attorneys) of your choice to handle your financial and property affairs in the event that you become unable to, through mental or physical incapacity.

Your Attorneys will be able to manage your bank accounts, sell your house if necessary, pay your bills and generally look after all such matters on your behalf.

A Health and Welfare LPA enables you (the Donor) to appoint one or more persons(the Attorneys) to make medical decisions on your behalf should
you be unable to do so yourself. Such decisions can include deciding
what medical treatment you receive, where you live and any
specific requirements you might have.

Both these documents are not effective unless they have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian – part of the Court of Protection.

They can however be drawn up in advance – and it is sensible to consider this when making or reviewing your Will.
